HOMEWORK

Homework assignments (kind and quality) are the responsibility of the classroom teacher. Homework often provides parents an excellent avenue of communication with the school (so that they may know and support learning activities.)

Homework should offer students an opportunity to extend or enrich learning in the classroom and the opportunity to reinforce concepts and skills which have been introduced by the classroom teacher. Successful completion of all homework assignments is essential to the development of “independent” work habits. If you have questions or problems concerning homework during the year, you are encouraged to discuss the situation with the teacher.

Teachers will assign a wide variety of home tasks.

Often students will be working on an idea or a project which he/she began in school. Students will benefit tremendously from parental encouragement (in every way possible) to study independently at home. Spelling, arithmetic computation, solving of mathematical problems, the use of reference materials, the writing of reports, and reading are a few examples of typical homework.

 How Much?

This will vary from grade level to grade level and from teacher to teacher. Homework is usually assigned four nights each week. Elementary teachers may at their discretion suggest experiences or activities which parents may provide at home as an extension of class work.

Should Parents Help?

Yes… by providing a quiet, well-lighted place for the child to do homework and by helping the child in planning a suitable time for completing his/her  responsibilities. Parental interest in listening to oral reports, reviewing spelling words, sharing knowledge of a given subject, or helping the student search out information on a subject can be most helpful as he develops independent work habits at home.

Homework While Absent

If a student is absent due to illness, the teacher will be very willing to assemble appropriate materials for study at home. Please call the office to make arrangements.

Make-up Work/Tests

Make-up work and tests following a one-day absence should be done within three (3) school days. Make-up work and tests for longer absences should be done within five (5) days after returning to school. A longer period of make-up time may be needed and allowed (with the approval of the teacher involved) for unusual circumstances.

*Achievement tests are administered in the fall to new students. Testing is repeated for the entire student body in the spring. We presently use Stanford Testing.
